Fogus Edge-Caching

Fogus Edge-Caching

Mobile data traffic is currently proliferated by massive requests for the same (on-demand) video
content, a.k.a. popular video content. To effectively meet the extensive content reuse, Fogus Edge-Caching employs proactive (yet resource-efficient) placement and delivery of popular content at the network edge. The so-called network caching can play a key role in reducing backhaul capacity requirements of wireless networks at peak periods and increase spectrum reuse in the radio access network (RAN).

Fogus Edge-Caching is a suite of application-layer protocols that enable end terminals and access points located at the network edge to cache popular content in off-peak periods and deliver it on-demand by the end users. The Fogus Edge-Caching suite of protocols significantly lowers network congestion during peak periods, reduce the playback delay experienced by the end users and drastically increase network responsiveness upon delivering popular video content. Fogus-Edge Caching currently supports two standalone components that can either operate independently or be coordinated by a common popular content placement server, depending on the scenario and the customer requirements.

Fogus Edge-Caching End Terminal Component
The End Terminal Component is a beta release of a suite of application-layer protocols designed for end terminals supporting Android OS, including mobile terminals, tablets and smart TVs. Preliminary support of personalized semi-automatic prediction of the popular content is supported in this version enabling custom-made support of popular content prediction and placement strategies in accordance with the operational environment of interest.

Fogus Edge-Caching Access Point Component
The Access Point Component is a beta release of a suite of application-layer protocols designed for access points, laptops and personal computers supporting Linux. Preliminary support of personalized semi-automatic prediction of the popular content is also supported in this version which, however, further enables cloud-empowered popular content prediction and placement combined with big data analysis.
